Software architecture

A clear design for how your software is split, stores data, talks to other systems and grows, before code is written.

Architecture mistakes are cheap on paper and expensive in production. We work out what the system must do, how much load and data it must handle and which parts change most often. Then we design the components, data model, interfaces and hosting, and record each decision with its reasons so your engineers can build on it without guessing.

What you get

  • Context and component diagrams showing every service, data store and external system
  • A data model covering entities, ownership, retention and where each record lives
  • Interface definitions for internal APIs and integrations, including error handling
  • Architecture decision records explaining each major choice and the options rejected
  • Capacity, availability and security requirements written as testable targets
  • For existing systems, a gap list between today’s code and the target design

How it works

  1. 01

    Requirements

We pin down users, workloads, data volumes, integrations and the qualities that matter most, such as speed or auditability.

  2. 02

    Options

Two or three candidate designs are sketched and compared on cost, complexity, team skills and how they handle failure.

  3. 03

    Design

The chosen design is detailed into components, data model, interfaces and hosting, with each decision recorded.

  4. 04

    Validate

Risky parts are proven with small spikes or load tests, and we walk your engineers through the design before handover.

Questions

Do you recommend microservices?

Only when team size, deployment needs and domain boundaries justify the extra moving parts. Many products are better served by a well-structured single application with clear modules, and we will say so when that is the case.

Can you review an architecture we already have?

Yes. We read the code, infrastructure and documentation, talk to the engineers, and compare what exists with what the system now needs. You get a list of risks ranked by impact and the change that would address each one.

Who builds the system after the design?

Your own team, another supplier or Clockborn. The design is written to be handed over: diagrams, decision records and interface definitions are complete enough for any competent team to build from.
